What does 2D echo detect?

A type of echo called Doppler ultrasound shows how well blood flows through your heart’s chambers and valves. Echo can detect possible blood clots inside the heart, fluid buildup in the pericardium (the sac around the heart), and problems with the aorta.

  • Person needs to uncover the chest and lay on the examination table
  • A colourless gel is applied to the chest area to analyse the sound vibrations
  • The technician moves the transducer across the various parts of the chest. The gel helps the transducer get views of the heart
  • Technician can ask to change the laying position to get better assessment
  • The gel is removed after the test
  • The images can be viewed on a computer monitor and printed on paper, or recorded in DVD, and given to the patient after interpretation of results

How much time does the 2D Echo test take?

It takes around half an hour to 1 hour to complete the test. It is always done in the presence of a radiologist and a cardiologist.
